ABOUT
As the eyes and ears of the SAPS, Neighbourhood Watch groups all over the country have proved exceptionally successful in reducing crime.
These Neighbourhood Watch groups are sanctioned by local Police Stations who
appreciate the directness and the immediacy of the help they receive. It makes them more efficient. The Kalk Bay and St James NW is a properly constituted NW and has the approval of local and national government.
Broadly speaking our Neighbourhood Watch has the following aims:
• To provide a crime reporting organization to which all Kalk Bay and St James
residents belong,
• To provide an information service to the local police in respect of unusual
occurrences in the area which may indicate that a crime is about to take
place or is taking place,
• To provide residents with information regarding crime and its prevention in
Kalk Bay and St James,
• Encourage all Kalk Bay and St James residents to accept responsibility for
reporting suspicious matters in their immediate area,
• Encourage residents to be aware of the need to take responsibility for the
protection of their possessions and person,
This will be done by dividing the area into sectors and electing a Block Captain whose responsibility would include:
• Establishing names of residents in the sector with their contact details,
• Providing residents with contact details of SAPS and Security Companies
who are active in the area as well as security advice,
• Establishing safe houses in the area to which, in particular, minors can go in
the event of a problem (a safe house could be a business run from home),
• Identify single, elderly or other vulnerable people living in the sector,
• Continue the Kalk Bay and St James CrimeWatch incident awareness
project to keep residents informed of criminal activity and security related
issues by email,
• Maintain a CrimeWatch website and the Rogues Gallery Project,
• Create awareness of Kalk Bay and St James NW through signage with
the slogan “We Look Out For Each Other”, capturing the spirit of the Kalk Bay and St James Neighbourhood Watch.
The benefits of a neighbourhood watch will include but not be limited to:
• A considerable reduction of crime in the area,
• A greater spirit of co-operation amongst residents which in turn would lead
to the area remaining highly sought after,
• Create a culture of good neighbourliness.
